LEWISTON — Police were at the Olive Branch Cafe on Lisbon Street Saturday afternoon for a reported standoff with a man who was threatening to shoot himself in the parking lot.

Lewiston Police Lt. Kelly Hamel said they received a call at 3:20 p.m. that a man was in his car in the parking lot threatening to harm himself with a handgun.

The cafe closed at 3 p.m.

He did not say he wanted to harm anyone else, and after nearly an hour of communicating with police on scene, the suspect surrendered peacefully.

The suspect, described as an adult male in distress, was transferred to a local medical facility for crisis intervention, Hamel said.

Hamel said the situation was under control and the suspect in custody at 4:18 p.m. and that his handgun was confiscated.

The area on Lisbon Street was locked down “for the safety of citizens, workers, and the suspect,” he said. It was reopened after the suspect was taken into custody.

There are no charges pending at this time.
