LEWISTON — It’s only a drill.
That’s what you should tell yourself this week if you happen to catch Lewiston Fire Department personnel cutting holes in the ice for a dangerous rescue at No Name Pond.
Starting Tuesday morning and continuing on Jan. 19 and Jan. 24, the Fire Department will be conducting ice water rescue training at the pond.
According to a city press release, the training is designed to provide firefighters and emergency medical personnel with a hands-on environment designed to demonstrate and practice the skills necessary to safely rescue a person who has fallen through weak ice.
On Monday, the department will prepare for the training by cutting a hole in the ice along the private beach. Barricades will be placed around the hole to mark its location, the press release states, and residents should use caution in that area.
The training meets nationally recognized standards for ice water rescue, and is funded through an anonymous donation that enabled the Lewiston Fire Department to purchase the necessary rescue equipment and suits, the release states.
The equipment will be placed into service at Central Station, 2 College St., and at the 834 Main St. and 976 Sabattus St. substations.
