LEWISTON — Police said a local man was arrested Wednesday minutes after he robbed the Rainbow Federal Credit Union on Main Street.
Police swarmed the area after a man had reportedly handed a teller a note, claiming he was armed and demanding money.
No one was hurt in the heist, but the suspect fled with an undisclosed amount of cash, according to police.
Within minutes, police tracked a suspect to a house on Wakefield Street, a few streets away from the business.
It appeared that a standoff would ensue, but just before 4 p.m., police arrested Brent Roaix, 33, and charged him with robbery and violation of bail conditions. Money from the robbery was recovered in the house, police said.
Roaix lives at 76 Elm St., a short distance from the credit union, police said.
Police also took another man out of the home in handcuffs, although he was ultimately not charged in the robbery.
Jess Paquette, who lives near Rainbow, said she had just been dropped off at a State Farm office down the street from the credit union when police arrived.
“The police told us to stay inside,” Paquette said. “They were out there with Tasers and long guns, all of that. You know it’s serious when the long guns come out.”
She said one of the men removed from the Wakefield Street home appeared to have either a bandage or a white bandanna around his head when he was removed from the home on Wakefield Street.
Roaix has a criminal history in the Lewiston area that includes convictions for forgery and robbery. As recently as October, he lived in a home on Wakefield Street, although it was not immediately clear if it was the same home where he was arrested Wednesday.
Police were continuing to investigate the robbery later Wednesday.
