PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — With a salute to an Old Port beer pub, Forbes.com has selected Portland as the nation’s most livable city.

Along with high marks for income growth and culture, Portland was cited for its low levels of crime and unemployment. Forbes.com. generously identifies the Portland metropolitan area as having 513,000 residents. The site said they can afford relatively high living costs because of a 6.3 percent income growth rate over the past five years.

Among the attractions cited by Forbes.com were the microbrews at Gritty McDuff’s, where customers can enjoy a pint along cobblestone streets.

Listed behind Portland among the most livable cities were Bethesda, Md.; Des Moines, Iowa; Bridgeport/Stamford, Conn, and Tulsa, Okla.
