When I was a member of the New Gloucester Selectmen, I really appreciated hearing from my neighbors about the issues they cared about, even when we disagreed. Having frank and honest discussions is healthy, and it is a necessary part of our form of government, but it can, and should, remain civil.

Though it is always beneficial to have input from all sides, it is distracting when the rhetoric and conversations take on negative connotations. I believe that it is now time to move past the unfortunate rhetoric and accusations that have divided the town, and look to the future of what a new construction project can do.

Now that opinions have been aired, votes have been held and the selectmen have authorized the town manager to sign the contract with Ganneston, I think it is high time residents stop the fighting and return to considering what is good about our community and what the future holds for us.

I believe that the future is bright, and I want to work productively with my fellow citizens on the issues we face in the future, and the ideas we have for improving our town. Let’s have conversations, and let’s be honest, but let’s keep it civil and let’s keep it productive.

I raised my children in this town, and I have lived here for decades. I love this town and I want to see it continue to grow, thrive and be a place I am proud of.
