Library to begin spring hours

CARRABASSETT VALLEY — The Carrabassett Valley Public Library is now closed on Sundays. Spring hours will begin Tuesday, April 17. The hours are: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays.

Presentation on effects of climate change

WOODSTOCK — The Mollyockett Chapter of Trout Unlimited will meet at 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 18, at the Mollyockett Motel, Route 26.

Dr. Lindsey Rustad, co-director of the USDA Northeast Climate Change Hub, research ecologist, team leader of the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest in New Hampshire and avid fly fisherman, will speak on “Climate Changing, Forests and Fish.”

The presentation will focus specifically on the effects of climate change on the forests, wildlife and fishing in the mountains of western Maine.

Light refreshments will be served. The presentation is free and the public is welcome.

Storytelling Guild to swap stories

FARMINGTON — A Storytelling Guild story swap will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 19, at St. Joseph Parish Hall, intersection of Middle and Quebec streets.

Paris Cape Historical Society to meet

PARIS — The Paris Cape Historical Society will hold its first meeting of 2018 at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 19, at its museum at 77 High St.

The public is welcome to attend this meeting. There is ample parking behind the museum and in the driveway in front of the museum.

After a short business meeting Jacob Merrill, a local student, will discuss the scrapbooks that his great grandmother put together. The scrapbooks cover Paris events during the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s. Refreshments will be served after the program.

Butterfly release to celebrate loved ones

MEXICO — The Hope Association will host a Butterfly Release Celebration to celebrate loved ones at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 9, at the Briar Patch Greenhouse, 91 Highland Terrace. Rain date is Sunday, June 10.

Butterflies are available for purchase for $20 at the Hope Association, on Facebook and at area businesses. There will be refreshments, 50/50 and crafts for sale. The deadline to order butterflies and be recognized in the printed programs is Saturday, May 19.

Clean donations needed for sale

FARMINGTON — The Farmington Falls Fire Company members are planning the annual benefit yard sale and chicken barbecue in July that will benefit the Farmington Falls youth baseball programs.

Clean donations for the sale are needed. The committee is accepting donations now for storage until July. For information on how to drop off donations or have them picked up, call and leave a message for Bob at 207-778-3156 or Junior at 207-778-2181.

Mallet School places in recycling challenge

SOUTH PORTLAND — Farmington’s W.G. Mallett School is the third place winner for the state in the seventh annual CLYNK for Schools Recycling Challenge, which took place Jan. 29 through March 26.

Schools in Maine and New York were challenged to recycle and raise funds by collecting redeemable bottles and cans. For every dollar raised in the challenge period, schools received a 50 cent match from from a local supermarket chain, plus the opportunity to compete for other cash prizes.

This year, schools from the states recycled enough cans and bottles to raise a grand total of $27,562.50.

Participants received the change that they raised plus the 50 cent match and winning schools received prize money. Mallett School collected $1,384.36, earning third place and $500 prize.
