Mother’s Day service at Rumford Elks

RUMFORD — The Rumford Elks Lodge 862 will have the annual Mother’s Day service at 9 a.m. Sunday, May 13, in the lodge room.

Bring a mother or grandmother to the service that honors all moms. The service will be followed by a light breakfast.

Christian Women United luncheon

PARIS — The Christian Women United luncheon will be served at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 15, at the First Congregational Church, 17 East Main St. Sammie Angel of Dixfield will sing.

Contact Janice at 207-743-5770 for reservations. The cost is $8 for the meal, and a love offering will be taken to cover the cost of the singer.

OCEA-R to meet at Oxford Hills High School

PARIS — The Oxford County Educators Association-Retired will meet Friday, May 18, at Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School. The culinary arts students will provide the meal.

The meeting will begin at approximately 11 a.m., but sign-ins will begin at 10:30. Business for the month will include the drawing for the May Basket Raffle, an effort to raise funds for the scholarship program designed to help Oxford County students who pursue their education beyond high school. Local businesses contributed to the items in the May Basket Raffle.

Erica Judd was not available for the April program, but President John Kimball gave a talk on his recent travels.

The fundraiser for May is a plant sale, and the program will be presented by Marcia Cylik on “Marcia and Jezebel,” a demonstration of how women dressed during the Civil War period.

Contradance to be held

OTISFIELD — A contradance will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 18, at the Otisfield Community Hall, 292 State Route 121.

Music will be provided by Don Roy and friends. Admission will be by donation.

Bird watchers visit Valentine Farm

BETHEL — The inaugural 2018 bird watching event at Mahoosuc Land Trust’s Valentine Farm was led by James Reddoch, an MLT member and bird enthusiast. Seventeen people with birding skills ranging from beginner to experienced bird watcher, walked the universally accessible trail at Valentine Farm and spotted 25 species of birds.

The effort was part of Global Big Day, a day dedicated to bird counts across the globe. Visit ebird.org/globalbigday for more information.

The next bird walk will be held at 8 a.m. Saturday, May 19, at Valentine Farm, 162 North Road. All are welcome.

Wilton church continues 200-year celebration

WILTON — The United Church of Christ’s 200 years will be celebrated on the weekend of May 19 and 20. 

All are welcome at 4 p.m. Saturday, May 19, for light refreshments and to greet ministers who have served the church in the past. At 4:30 there will be a skit, written by Margaret Proctor, on the history of the church throughout the past 200 years, followed by a free dinner, “Pasta with the Pastor,” in the vestry. Dessert will be a “Happy Birthday” cake.

The Sunday service will welcome past clergy as preachers and honor senior members. There will be special music. Refreshments and a social hour will follow. Members of the community are welcome.
