Society to hear about poor farms
OXFORD — The Oxford Historical Society will be holding its monthly meeting at 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 30, at 3 Pleasant St. followed by a presentation by Jean Hankins, Historian for the Otisfield Historical Society entitled “Poor Farms of Otisfield, Maine” at 6:30 p.m.
The public is welcome. New members may join for $5 per year.
Festival raises more than $2k
FARMINGTON — Literacy Volunteers of Franklin and Somerset Counties riased $2,600 at its literacy festival and book sale recently, which will support the One to One Adult Tutoring program, now in its 40th year.
Fourty-eight volunteers shared their passion and time to create the event — a combination of 316.5 hours, including the contributions of 10 literacy presenters. There was music, story telling, poetry reading, local authors, shadow puppet theatre, origami, poetry games, essential oils, baby goats, and of course tons of great books!
The next Literacy Volunteers Literacy Festival will be held from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29, at Spruce Mountain Adult Education in Livermore Falls.
Jay thrift shop to open
JAY — The Parish Thrift Shop at Bartlett Memorial UMC will open for the season on Saturday May 26. Hours of operation will be 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays.
The shop is handicapped-accessible, and donations are welcome.
