POLAND — A local man remained in fair condition at a Lewiston hospital Wednesday, suffering from a stab wound inflicted at his home at 140 Harris Hill Road early Tuesday.

A fire was reported around midnight at a mobile home where David Hodgkin lived that is owned by Megan Pettengill. Flames were knocked down by 1 a.m. by a number of responding fire departments.

A fire investigator said Tuesday morning that the blaze started in the kitchen, but he didn’t disclose a cause.

The building, a mobile home with a two-story wooden addition at one end, was severely damaged by fire and smoke, authorities said.

Firefighters discovered the injured Hodgkin as they responded to his 911 call.

Investigators hope to interview Hodgkin sometime Wednesday, depending on the rate of his recovery, said Sgt. Ken Grimes at the State Fire Marshal’s Office.

Information gleaned from his interview should help investigators pinpoint the cause of the fire, Grimes said.

Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Detective Sgt. William Gagne said he hoped to glean information about the stabbing from Hodgkin. He said early indications were that Hodgkin suffered a single stab wound to the abdomen.

Detectives from the state and Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Department executed a joint search warrant to comb the scene for evidence of a possible crime; the state for evidence of possible arson, the county for possible assault. Hodgkin was rushed to the hospital operating room and couldn’t consent to a search.

Sniffer dogs were used by investigators at the scene.

Neighbors reported hearing what sounded like two gunshots about the time the fire broke out. Hodgkin was alone in the home at the time of the 911 call.

Gagne said he had identified no suspects as of early Tuesday afternoon. “We still have a lot of questions,” he said.
