FREEPORT – Gayle L. Downing, 68, died Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2018, at Hawthorne House, in Freeport.

She was born in Bath, on Feb. 12, 1950, a daughter of James P. and Ethelyn (Spinney) Downing.

She attended Bath Schools and graduated from Edward Little High School, in Auburn. She was a bookkeeper and accountant for Maine Poly, in Greene. She was also self employed as a bookkeeper, in Greene.

She was a devout Roman Catholic.

She enjoyed landscaping at her home, and especially enjoyed spending time with her family and grandchildren.

She is survived by her son, Justin E. LaFontaine, and his wife, Erica, of Greene; two nieces, Susan Edwards and her husband, Eric, of Sun City, Calif., and Annie Mullen Couture and her husband, Chris, of Topsham; longtime friend, Leroy Buckley, of Lewiston; three grandchildren, Sarah, Jacob and Anna LaFontaine; and three great-nephews, William, Chase, and Donovan Edwards.

She was predeceased by one son, Paul LaFontaine, on April 20, 2009, and two sisters, Suzanne Downing and Sherri Parent.

A memorial service will be held Jan. 6, 3 p.m., at Greene Baptist Church, in Greene. A gathering of family and friends will follow immediately after, at the church. Burial will be at Old Parker Head Cemetery, in Phippsburg, in the spring.
