Maine is looking at a messy upcoming day on the roads, as snow, sleet and freezing rain are all in the forecast in the Pine Tree State.

Forecasts call for snow to start early Friday and later turn over to sleet and around midday. Travel conditions are expected to be slippery.

William Watson from the National Weather Service said it’ll be the first substantial snowfall for most parts of Maine in 10 or 11 days. He said the western mountains could see up to 4 inches of snow. On the coast, Portland is expected to get about one inch of snow.

Parts of the state have no snow on the ground right now, as warm weather and a hard rain earlier in the week washed much of it away.
