LEWISTON — As expected, a pair of Lewiston Maineiacs skaters returned to the ice Wednesday for practice, and another is on his way.
The Maineiacs welcomed Michael Chaput and Sam Carrier back to the ice Wednesday for their first skates with the team in a couple of weeks. Chaput was at Philadelphia Flyers training camp, and Carrier was with the Washington Capitals. Both rolled into the locker room for the team’s 1 p.m. practice on time.
After playing in a preseason game Tuesday night in Calgary for the Vancouver Canucks, it appears Pierre-Olivier Morin will be back with the Maineiacs soon, as well.
According to a source with the team, Morin should be back in time to suit up for this weekend’s home games against the Acadie-Bathurst Titan, a possibility confirmed by messages on the player’s Facebook page Wednesday.
After sitting out the final game of his season-opening five-game suspension for a hit from behind in the preseason, forward Christophe Lalonde will also be ready to return to the lineup and make his debut Saturday. Barring injury or illness, Saturday will mark the first time this season the Maineiacs will have a full arsenal of players at their disposal.
“It’s going to be nice to have everyone in the lineup,” Maineiacs’ coach J.F. Houle said. “The decisions on who to play will be tough, because some of the younger players stepped up while the other players were gone, but the team is definitely stronger with everyone back.”
Goalie gone
The Maineiacs are down to two goalies, as of Wednesday morning’s practice.
With the team skating out for practice, it was apparent that one — Jordan Kennedy — was missing.
Kennedy, last year the backup to Adrien Lemay, was apparently informed Tuesday that the team would move forward, at least for the next few months, with Nicholas Champion and Andrey Makarov in the cage.
According to Kennedy’s Facebook page, he has been scooped up to play in the Maritime Junior A Hockey League, and will suit up for the Cambellton Tigers.
Roll ’em
Some hockey players are cut out to be movie stars. Others, not so much.
A pair of us from the Sun Journal intercepted the Maineiacs before practice today and put them through a rigorous, on-camera test. They had to skate to the camera, stop, and say the following:
“Hi, I am _____. I am from _______. I wear number ___ and play ______ for your Lewiston Maineiacs.”
They then had to skate away.
For most of the players and coaches, it wasn’t much of an issue. For others, it was an adventure. Look for the final product of that video to be posted to the Sun Journal’s special Maineiacs section soon. (We may even include a blooper reel).
