Yesterday morning ground was broken on the former South End baseball grounds, Lower Lisbon Street, Lewiston, for the four-story brick block to be erected by the Maine Supply & Garage Co. The building will be 50 by 100 feet and will cost about $30,000. Thomas Saucier is the contractor. The brick work has been sublet to J. A. Champoux of Auburn.

Lewiston City Clerk Lucien Lebel urged holders of malt beverage and liquor permits, such as beer parlors, clubs and hotels, to apply soon for the 1961 liquor licenses so they won’t be caught short Jan 1. The applicants’ names must be published six consecutive days prior to the city council hearing and approval is required by the city and the State Liquor Commission, Lebel said.

Joan Benoit Samuelson of Freeport, competing in her first marathon since winning the event in the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, ran a personal best, 2:21:21 to win the women’s division of the Chicago marathon.
Benoit Samuelson said afterwards, “It’ll be a while before I run another marathon. If I had run a great race here, I might have called it quits.
“But 2:20 is still to be broken. Maybe we’ll do it again.” she added.
