WILTON — Several fire departments fought a structure fire on Birch Street on Thursday night.

The single-family home at 44 Birch St. is owned by Rick Karkos, Wilton fire Chief Sonny Dunham said at the scene as heavy smoked poured from the house. Karkos runs a heating and plumbing business.

Birch Street, off Depot Street near the former Forster Manufacturing site, is a narrow, hilly street, which presented issues for firefighters who boosted water from a hydrant at the bottom of the hill to a tanker, then up to another one at the top of the hill. Firetrucks were lined up single file on the narrow road.

Crews from Farmington, Jay, Livermore Falls, Livermore and East Dixfield arrived to help the Wilton department. A Jay firefighter said they were called out at about 8:45 p.m. in 12-degree weather.

More information on the fire will be posted Friday.
