E. A. Bickford who recently leased the store at 40 Hampshire St. from the city of Auburn for a restaurant has nearly completed the repairs and decorations and will open the restaurant April 1. R. S. Chase will be the manager and a fine up to date place with a seating capacity of 52 will be run. The name will be The Standard and will be open daily from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mr. Bickford. who is one of Auburn’s hustling young business men. will now be proprietor not only of a flourishing grocery business but also of a well located and up to date restaurant.
50 years ago, 1961
Two suspicious characters, sitting on the steps of Edward Little High School last night, turned out to be imposters.
Auburn police received a call from an Auburn man who had been in the school, saying when he left the building he passed two men on the steps on the Academy Street side of the building, who pulled their hats over their eyes as he walked past.
Patrolman Albion C. Russell drove to the scene and the two men were still there. The two “men” turned out to be two teen-aged Auburn girls — dressed in men’s clothing.

Adults trying to improve their reading skills often have trouble finding books that are easy to read while at the same time feature topics that interest them.
Attempting to help local adult education and literacy groups, the Lewiston Public Library has purchased about 300 high-interest/low-reading level books that officials hope will enable illiterates to improve reading skills while at the same time become regular library patrons.
