BASEBALL

Joey Meneses hit a go-ahead three-run homer in the eighth inning Sunday and Triston Casas belted a three-run homer in the ninth, lifting the Portland Sea Dogs to a 7-2 win over the New Hampshire Fisher Cats in Manchester, New Hampshire.

With Portland trailing 2-1 in the eighth, Pedro Castellanos reached on an error and Casas followed with a single before Meneses launched his fourth home run of the season.

In the ninth, Jeisson Rosario drew a leadoff walk and Castellanos again was safe on an error. Casas then hit a drive to right for his fourth home run.

Adam Lau got the win in relief of Josh Winckowski, retiring all five batters he faced, with three strikeouts.

The Sea Dogs finished 6-6 on a 12-game trip to Hartford and New Hampshire. They open a homestand Tuesday against Hartford.

• Red Sox prospects Jarren Duran and Triston Casas and former Portland Sea Dogs catcher Tim Federowicz are among 28 players on the U.S. preliminary roster for an Olympic qualifying tournament that starts next Monday.

Only players not on 26-man major league rosters and injured lists are eligible. The U.S. roster has several former major leaguers, including pitchers Homer Bailey, Edwin Jackson and David Robertson, catcher Matt Wieters, infielder Todd Frazier and outfielders Matt Kemp and John Jay.

AUTO RACING

INDIANAPOLIS 500: Scott Dixon slammed the brakes on IndyCar’s current youth movement by winning his fourth Indianapolis 500 pole by a mere 0.03 seconds.

The six-time IndyCar champion was the ninth and final driver to make his four-lap qualifying attempt around Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and he beat a pair of IndyCar’s rising young stars – 21-year-old American Colton Herta and 20-year-old Dutchman Rinus VeeKay.

Dixon’s average speed of 231.685 knocked Herta to second and VeeKay to third for the front row for next Sunday’s race.

In a 75-minute shootout for the final three spots in the field, Sage Karam, Will Power and Simona de Silvestro made the race. Charlie Kimball and R.C. Enerson were knocked from the 33-car field.

FORMULA ONE: Max Verstappen took the lead in the championship race for the first time in his career with a dominating victory at the Monaco Grand Prix – his first win on the vaunted circuit.

The Red Bull driver took control of the race right at the start from the second position, in part because pole sitter Charles Leclerc had a mechanical issue and did not start.

Verstappen took a four-point lead over seven-time F1 champion Lewis Hamilton, who finished seventh on an uncharacteristically bad day for the usually reliable Mercedes team.

GOLF

LPGA: Wei-Ling Shu eagled the par-5 15th hole, creating a four-shot swing that gave her a two-shot lead as she earned her first LPGA Tour victory at the Pure Silk Championship in Williamsburg, Virginia.

She closed with a 3-under 68 to finish at 13-under 271, two shots ahead of Moriya Jutanugarn, who shot a 70.

Jessica Korda was third at 10 under after a 70.

SOCCER

ENGLAND: Liverpool and Chelsea secured the final two Champions League qualification spots, with Leicester missing out in the three-way fight for a top-four finish in the Premier League.

Chelsea’s 2-1 defeat at Aston Villa didn’t prove critical because Leicester conceded three late goals to lose 4-2 at home to Tottenham.

Liverpool beat Crystal Palace 2-0 thanks to two goals from Sadio Mane and jumped into third place, two points above fourth-place Chelsea.

Leicester, which also missed out on Champions League qualification by losing on the final day of last season, was leading 2-1 after 76 minutes, only for goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel to punch the ball into his own net. Tottenham substitute Gareth Bale scored in the 87th minute and again in stoppage time.

FRANCE: Lille upset the odds to capture its first French championship in 10 years, winning 2-1 at Angers to edge defending champion Paris Saint-Germain by one point.

HOCKEY

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS: Trevor Moore scored twice in the second period to help the United States beat Canada 5-1 in Latvia.

Jason Robertson, Adam Clendening and Matt Tennyson also scored and Jake Oettinger stopped 26 of 27 shots in relief of injured starter Anthony Stolarz as the U.S. improved to 1-1. Canada is 0-2.

BASKETBALL

WNBA: DeWanna Bonner scored 22 points, hitting a 3-pointer in the final minute to help the visiting Connecticut Sun hold off the Las Vegas Aces for a 72-65 win.

The Sun (5-0) matched their best start since 2018 and stayed alone atop the WNBA standings.

• Betnijah Laney scored 20 points, Sabrina Ionescu had 19 points and 12 assists and the visiting New York Liberty overcame 22 turnovers to beat the Chicago Sky, 93-85.

• Teaira McCowan scored 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, Jessica Breland added 17 points, 10 rebounds and five assists, and the Indiana Fever pulled away in the third quarter to defeat the visiting Washington Mystics, 89-77.

CYCLING

GIRO D’ITALIA: Belgian rider Victor Campenaerts won the 15th stage for his first victory in a Grand Tour, and Egan Bernal kept the leader’s pink jersey after a day that was marked by a large crash at the beginning of the route.

Campenaerts edged out Oscar Riesebeek at the end of the 91-mile route from Grado to Gorizia that crossed into Slovenia and covered the fourth-category climb to Gornje Cerovo three times.

RUNNING

ULTRAMARATHON DEATHS: Twenty-one people running a mountain ultramarathon died in northwestern China after hail, freezing rain and gale-force winds hit the high-altitude race, state media reported.

After an all-night rescue operation in freezing temperatures involving more than 700 personnel, rescuers were able to confirm that 151 people were safe out of a total of 172 participants. Twenty-one died, according to the official Xinhua News Agency, which said the runners suffered from physical discomfort and the sudden drop in temperature.

The runners were racing on an extremely narrow mountain path at an altitude reaching 6,500 to 9,800 feet. The 100-kilometer race was held Saturday in the Yellow River Stone Forest tourist site in Baiyin city in Gansu province.
