LEWISTON — George Merrill, a 25-year veteran of the Lewiston Fire Department, retired recently.

He was hired in July 1985, was promoted to lieutenant 10 years later, then promoted to battalion chief in September 2003, and topped off his career with a promotion to assistant chief in March 2006.

He was an active member with the Maine Fire Chiefs Association, and served as president with the Androscoggin County Fire Chiefs Association.
