Jim Benson: Sen. Collins should denounce abortion
Sen. Collins will have a better chance of being reelected if she denounces abortion. Proverbs 6:17 states God hates the shedding of innocent blood. What is more innocent than an unborn child in the mother’s womb? Life does not begin at heartbeat, but at conception. Jeremiah 1:5 states that being a baby killer goes against […]
Mary Hughes: One person, one vote
People should vote their conscience, and choose the one person they believe will represent them and stand for their values. This is the best, most effective way for our voting process. Do people really want the candidate that comes in second place to win? Ranked-choice voting allows this possibility when a majority is not met. […]
Melody Fitch: Elevating voices of survivors during Domestic Violence Awareness Month
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. This year is unlike any that has come before in over four decades in our work to end domestic abuse and violence. Along with everyone else in our communities, we were stunned by the overwhelming power of a virus to instantly impact and cause us to focus our efforts […]
Wayne Whitney: Maine can do better than Sen. Collins
Susan Collins takes credit for every ship built at BIW, but when the chips are down she’s AWOL. BIW lost its last two contract bids, the $5.58 billion bid to build Navy frigates and the $936 million bid to build an Arleigh Burke destroyer. President Trump intervened in the frigate bid, directing that it go […]
John Rosenwald: Will vote again for Jan Collins
I support Jan Collins as a candidate for state Senate District 17. In 2018, I followed the race between her and Russell Black, attending numerous presentations by both candidates. Mr. Black was civil and approachable, but his legislative record disturbs me. Three times he approved tax cuts for wealthy Mainers, yet he voted against increasing […]
Cal Thomas: The Hispanic vote
MIAMI — Hispanics are 60% of the population of Miami-Dade County, according to the U.S. Census. In the 2016 election, Hillary Clinton won Hispanic votes here by a margin of about 290,000, which was not enough to win the state for her. An NBC News/Marist poll last month showed President Trump with a 50% to […]
Kerry Read: Branch is leader Senate District 19 needs
I have lived in South Paris since 1997. After my son graduated from Oxford Hills High School in 2012, I moved, briefly, out of state. But my Maine roots proved too deep to ignore, and I came back — to home. When I did, I found something new in our community. Supported by the Oxford […]
Leonard Pitts Jr.: Trump’s order discourages discussion of race, gender
“I didn’t know.” Those were the first words my friend, a white guy named Dave, spoke to me the day after the first episode of “Roots,” which depicted the capture and enslavement of an African boy named Kunta Kinte. This was 43 years ago. So you can perhaps imagine my frustration last year when the […]
